New Actors and Issues in the Post-Arab Uprisings Period
The Arab uprisings that emerged in reaction to unemployment, high inflation, corruption, and the lack of liberty under authoritarian rule in the Middle East and North Africa paved the way for social and political transformations in the region. As a consequence of these uprisings, new actors have gained prominence, while regional issues have become more aggravated and complicated, challenging existing national borders. The involvement of a broad range of regional and external actors in various parts of the region has created new conflicts and alliances. Jülide Karakoç is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Gedik University, Istanbul. She received an MA in International Relations from Galatasaray University, Istanbul, and a PhD in International Relations from Ankara University. She carried out her postdoctoral research in the Department of Political Science at Université de Montréal, where she worked as an invited lecturer giving a course on Middle Eastern politics. She has authored scholarly articles in Middle Eastern Studies, Critique, Arab Studies Quarterly, and Ethnic and Racial Studies, while her book Authoritarianism in the Middle East: Before and After the Arab Uprisings was published in 2015.
Duygu Ersoy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Gedik University, Istanbul. She completed her doctoral studies in 2012 at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of Middle East Technical University in Ankara, where she also received her Master’s degree. Ersoy’s major research interests include political theory, political sociology, social movements, and ideology.
