The Work-Family Balance in Light of Globalization and Technology
Technology is changing the way we integrate work and family life today. In an age in which information technology has brought the promise of autonomy and control by allowing asynchronous communications; in which work systems have enabled people to work from various times and in various locations; and in which work and non-work boundaries have as a result been blurred, the work and family interface needs to be reconsidered. This collection is the result of a careful selection of articles presented at the Sixth International Conference for Work and Family organized by the International Center for Work and Family at IESE Business School, Spain. It has a clear focus on technology, managers, globalization, and gender, and contributions analyse the state of affairs in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and North America. The chapters here offer innovative approaches to how technology, globalization, managers and gender issues are affecting the dynamics of work and family balance around the world. As such, the book will help practitioners and academics to make better decisions, to stay up to date on current developments, and to think critically about these fascinating and complex topics.
Mireia Las Heras is an Industrial Engineer, having trained at the Polytechnic School of Catalonia (UPC), Spain, and holds an MBA from IESE Business School at the University of Navarra, Spain. She received her PhD in Business Administration from Boston University, USA. She is an Associate Professor at IESE Business School, where she serves as the Research Director of the IESE Women in Leadership Center (I-Wil). She has published extensively in both academic and practitioner outlets, and co-chairs the bi-annual International Conference for Work and Family and the International Conference for Women in Business.
Nuria Chinchilla is a Full Professor at IESE Business School, where she holds the Carmina Roca and Rafael Pich-Aguilera Women and Leadership Chair. She is also the Founder and Director of the International Center for Work and Family. She received a PhD in Economics and Business Studies from the University of Navarra, Spain, a Law degree from the University of Barcelona, and an MBA and a PhD from IESE Business School at the University of Navarra. She also studied at Harvard Business School and Stanford Graduate School of Management, USA, and is a consultant to a wide range of companies and a member on the boards of various organizations. She is the founder and Director of the International Center for Work and Family.
Marc Grau received a PhD in Social Policy from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and an MA in Political and Social Sciences from University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He is a Research Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, USA, and currently serves as a collaborator at the International Center of Work and Family and as a researcher at Universitat International de Catalunya, Spain.
