Teaching Students to Become Digital Content Curators: Fact or Fiction?

Today’s students are faced with a virtual tsunami of digital information. Given this dilemma, they are often willing to surrender and rely on the first website listed on their Internet search. This can lead to disaster for, as we know, not everything on the Internet is of value, true, or accurate. A remedy to this situation is to arm students with the skills of digital content curation. This text outlines a seven step process that can easily be embedded into the curriculum of any academic discipline. It provides the reader with the skills necessary to examine digital content, determine accuracy, and synthesize that information into a creative and reliable product.

Brad Garner serves as Director of Faculty Enrichment in the Center for Learning and Innovation on the National and Global Campus of Indiana Wesleyan University, USA. He is a frequent presenter at conferences around the world and has delivered faculty development training on over 50 college campuses. He has written eight books, including Creating Engaged Learners and Digital Citizens (2017), and numerous articles that focus on ways to achieve excellence in teaching and learning.

“In the 21st century, it is important to talk about digital content. Overwhelmed with different pieces of information from all over the Internet, it is difficult to distinguish between true, adjusted, valuable, false [and] fake information. The main argument that the author makes in this book is how to teach students to find valuable digital content, or, in his words, “how to become digital content curators”. It is a very important subject, and, throughout this book, it [is] thoroughly explained. […] The book is appropriately written for a student audience but also for other readers. […] I would propose to every student to read the book and think about its propositions regarding Internet searches.”
