Professor Yongbin Zhang’s research is diverse, including micro/nano flow, nanoporous membrane filtration, lubrication, friction and wear. For more than 20 years, he has conducted research in lubrication since his career in mechanical engineering started. He has developed the flow equation for a nanoscale fluid flow and the theory of mixed rheologies elastohydrodynamic lubrication, which are important for the design of bearings, gears and other lubricated mechanical contacts.
He has also developed lubrication theories in elastoplastic and fully plastic contacts, which are important for the design of modern mechanical elements working in the condition of heavy loads. He has authored numerous invention patents registered in domestic China, mainly on the advanced lubrication technologies of bearings and gears for energy conservation; most of which have been transferred to enterprises.
