Dr R.S. Upendra obtained his MSc degree in Biotechnology from the University of Madras, India, his MTech in Biotechnology from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India, and his PhD in Biotechnology from Visvesvaraya Technological University, India. He has 15 years of teaching and research experience including one year abroad. His areas of specialization include biosimulations (ANN-GA), microbial biotechnology and nanotechnology. On the BE Biotechnology course, he handles the core topics of cell biology and genetics, molecular biology, immunotechnology, genomics and proteomics, molecular diagnostics, forensic science and labs to industrial scale.

He has received seven research grants from various funding agencies to date. He has 40 publications in various national and international journals to his credit, has presented 25 papers at national and international conferences, and won first prize (oral presentation category) at three international conferences. In addition, he has guided 16 BE student projects on various applied areas of biotechnology. He has filed three patents in the Indian patent office, and has discovered three lovastatin high yielding fungal isolates from natural hitherto unexplored sources.

He is presently working on the KSCST-funded project “Scale-up studies of microalgae Chlorella rotunda for biolipids (biodiesel) as third generation Biofuel along with value-added products using waste-free technology”. Previously, in his doctoral work, he worked on the optimization of lovastatin production under SmF. Various hitherto underutilized substrates and renewable waste biomass were screened in the SSF process to enhance the yields of lovastatin.
