Dr S. Sheik Asraf has been working as an Assistant Professor at Kalasalingam University, India, since 2015. He completed his PhD thesis, entitled “Computational and functional genomic analysis of beta-lactamases, beta-galactosidase and cellulose synthase operon in Zymomonas mobilis”, under the guidance of Professor P. Gunasekaran at Madurai Kamaraj University, India, in 2013. He has research experience in the broad areas of bioinformatics, genomics and microbiology.
He is a recipient of the Junior Research Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. He has also received travel grants from the following agencies and institutes in order to participate in international workshops held in India: UNESCO, IUBMB, RCBTE, ICGEB, the National Science Foundation, the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum and the Department of Biotechnology.
He has received a number of awards from Kalasalingam University in recognition of his work in teaching, research, professional activity and administration, including Best Faculty Award – Junior Category Teaching Competency (2015-2016 academic year); Best Undergraduate Student Project Award (2015-2016 academic year); NPTEL Online Certified Faculty Award (2015-2016 academic year); and the Best Lab with Project Award (2016-2017 academic year).
He has published six journal articles, three book chapters, and 24 conference abstracts. He has completed four NPTEL online certificate courses offered by IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur. His current research focus is on the metagenomics of inanimate objects.
