With an MSc (Agriculture) and specialization in Plant Pathology, Dr Sambasivam (Sam) Periyannan started his scientific career as Horticultural Pathologist at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, India. In 2007, Sam moved to CSIRO and the University of Sydney, Australia, to undertake a PhD on the molecular genetic analysis of stem rust disease resistance in wheat.
After completing his PhD in 2011, Sam was appointed as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the same CSIRO lab for five years. In 2016, he was promoted to Research Scientist and, more recently, he moved to the Research School of Biology at the Australian National University on secondment to undertake an Early Career Fellowship awarded by the Australian Research Council.
Sam also holds Adjunct Research Fellow and Lecturer positions at the Universities of Queensland and Sydney, Australia.
