Professor Dato Dr Prepageran Narayanan started his career with the MBBS program at the University of Malaya in 1993. His area of expertise includes otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery, advanced endoscopic sinus surgery, endoscopic skull base surgery, otology, neurotology, skull base surgery and cochlear implants.
He worked abroad in the UK under the sponsorship of the Royal College of Surgeons, obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Training in 1998-1999 and a Clinical Fellowship in Neurotology and Advanced Otology, Skull Base Surgery (2002-2003) at Toronto General Hospital, Canada.
He is currently Senior Professor and consultant in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Malaya. He was the Chairman of the National Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Specialty Training Board in 2012-2013. He was also the President for the Malaysian Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery for 2013-2014 and Past President in 2014-2015. He is also the President of the Asian Research Symposium in Rhinology (2016). He is very actively involved in research with numerous research grants.
Prepageran is often an invited expert surgeon for complex endoscopic sinonasal skull base, cochlear implant and neurotology cases in Malaysia and the Asia Pasific Region. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Chiang Mai University, Thailand, Visiting Professor of the Universities of Mandalay and Yangon 1, Myanmar, Visiting Professor of Neurosurgery in the Sanjay Ghandi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow and BLDE University, India, and Mentor of the Skull Base Fellowship program at the University of Malaya, which receives fellows and surgeons from all over the worlds for attachment and training.
He is a member of numerous national and international organizations, including the International Consensus of Nasal Polyps Working Group, the ASEAN Rhinology Society, the Academy of Medicine: Malaysia, the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the ASEAN Academy of Neurotology and Otology, and the International Federation of Skull Base Surgery.
He is also a member of the International Advisory Board for Rhinoworld, Asia Pasific Cochlear Implant and Related Science, the International Academic Conference ORL and the World Council of Endoscopic Surgery of Skull Base and Brain. He will be the President of the 9th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery of Skull Base, Brain and Spine in 2020.
Prepageran is also a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow. He is a member of the board of examiners in the Master's in ENT in Malaysia and MRCS Edinburgh, and has been an external examiner for numerous Master's and PhD theses, and currently supervises PhD students. He has been the external examiner of the Singapore Master's ENT examination in 2011, 2012, and 2014, and external examiner for the University of Kenya in 2016.
He has been awarded numerous local and international awards including the Excellent Service Award and the Certificate of Merit for Distinguished Service, as well as the Distinction in Masters in Otolaryngology, all from the University of Malaya; he is a four-time recipient of the Certificate of Merit (for CME) from the Malaysian Medical Association; and he has also received medals for innovations at innovation and invention exhibitions and gold medals for international presentations.
He was recently awarded with the Cochlear Implant Surgeon of Excellence by the Victoria Health Care Foundation, Myanmar, and the Fellowship Award at the ASEAN ORL meeting in 2017. He was also recognized as an Honorary Member of the South African Otorhinolaryngology Society in 2013 and Fellow of the Indian Academy of Otorhinolaryngology in 2014.
Prepageran is the author of more than 20 textbooks including DVD electronic manuals and more than 180 papers published in local and international journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, and has numerous surgical video demonstrations to his credit. He is currently part of the editorial board and reviewer of more than 15 journals (local and international). He is also a sought-after speaker and presenter in his area of expertise and has been invited to more than 250 conferences in the Asia-Pacific region and across the world and has made more than 600 lecture presentations.
