Dr Perumal Varalakshmi

Molecular Microbiology

Dr Perumal Varalakshmi graduated with a Master's in Microbiology from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, India, and obtained her PhD in Microbiology from Bharathidasan University, India. She is currently working as Assistant Professor of Molecular Microbiology in the School of Biotechnology at Madurai Kamaraj University, India. She has 18 years of teaching and research experience. She received a teacher summer research fellowship from the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and trained on “Double strand break repair in Mitochondria” at the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore.

She has published 33 articles including research articles, reviews and book chapters in journals of national and international repute. She serves as a reviewer for many national and international journals in the field of biotechnology for fuels. Her main research interests are bioenergy and bioprospecting of cyanobacteria and microalgae for value added products.

Presently, she is mentoring nine PhD students and has completed several major research projects for the DST, SERB, CSIR, UGC and Bioextract, Bangalore, with others in progress. She has organized four scientific conferences at national level, and delivered keynote addresses at various conferences. She has received several awards in the scentific arena, including the DST Young Scientist award and the Honorary Fellow Award from the Indian Association of Applied Microbiologist (FIAAM) in 2015.
