Professor Patricia Barbeito

Patricia Felisa Barbeito has a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University and is currently Professor of American Literatures in the Department of Literary Arts and Studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, USA. Her research focuses primarily on race, ethnicity and gender in American literature and culture, in particular on the African American protest novels and black resistance movements of the 1940s through the 1960s. She is also a translator of modern Greek fiction and poetry.

Recent publications include several essays on Mediterranean noir and the gender dynamics of Greek author Petros Markaris’s detective novels. Her translation of Elias Maglinis’s The Interrogation (Birmingham Modern Greek Translations, 2013) received the 2013 Modern Greek Studies Association’s Constantinides Memorial Translation Prize and was shortlisted for Greece’s 2014 National Translation Award. She is currently working on a book about the African-American author Chester Himes.
