Martin Howard is currently Head of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at University College Cork, Ireland, having previously served as Visiting Professor at the University of Montpellier, France, and Shanghai University, China. His research interests lie in the areas of second language acquisition, study abroad, sociolinguistics, Canadian studies and the French language, where he has published widely.
He has previously served as President of the Association for Canadian Studies in Ireland, Vice-President of the European Second Language Association, and Secretary / Treasurer of the International Council for Canadian Studies. He has also been co-convenor of the AILA Research Network on Study Abroad and Language Learning. He is currently Chair of the European transnational COST Action ‘Study Abroad Research in European Perspective’ (SAREP) which runs from 2016-2020.
