Dr M Govindaraj is a Scientist of Crop Improvement, based at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), India. He received a PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), India, working on the development and dissemination of diverse breeding lines and hybrid parents in millet. He leads the ‘HarvestPlus-supported pearl millet biofortification research and development for cultivar development and strengthening’ research partnership, which concerns India and West and Central Africa.

Dr Govindaraj was involved in the landmark release of a first high-iron variety (Dhanashakti) and three iron biofortified pearl millet hybrids (ICMH 1202, ICMH 1203 and ICMH 1301) in India. Further to this, he has been recognized with the 2009 International Scholar Award, by the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), Georgia, USA, as well as the 2014 Resource Mobilizer Award and 2016 Promising Young Scientist Award.

He has developed and disseminated more than 100 lines, published more than 50 journal articles and co-edited two books, and he serves as an editorial board member and peer reviewer for several scientific journals.
