Dr Ernesto D.R. Santibañez-Gonzalez's interests are primarily in developing high quality research coupled with technology transfer activities that generate innovative solutions to relevant and real problems that arise in the intersection of climate change and sustainability. His main research interests are on the problems at the interface of climate change and sustainability that arise in various fields, such as sustainable and resilience supply chain and logistics, supply chain analytics, sustainable operations management, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and the circular economy.
Ernesto's current research is characterized by integrating linear/no-linear mathematical models, game theory-based models, complex heuristics/metaheuristics, big-data, information systems and internet technology to understand and model how climate change and the required balance of economic, environmental and social issues will impact society, companies and organizations.
He has a background in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management and Operations Research with a PhD in Production Engineering/Operations Research from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, with a research stay at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as part of a joint program. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at the Universidad de Talca, Chile.
Ernesto is currently serving as Associate Editor of the Journal of Cleaner Production and Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing. He is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Power Sources and the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy. He has been the Managing Guest Editor of six Special Issues of top-tier journals including the European Journal of Operational Research (IF: 3.29), the Journal of Cleaner Production (IF: 5.7), the International Journal of Production Research (IF: 2.3), and Sustainability (IF:1.7), and Guest Editor for two Special Issues of journals such as the International Journal of Production Economics (IF 3.49) and Computers and Industrial Engineering (IF 2.62).
As Associate Editor, Ernesto has the responsibility of supervising the entire submission and review process of the manuscripts submitted including the final acceptance for publication. This service provides a broad and global vision of research trends, challenges and opportunities in many fields related to supply chains, logistics, operations research, operations management, climate change, sustainability, environment, and manufacturing, to name a few. He is the founding subject editor of Operations Research, Operations Management and Decision Support approaches for sustainability in a top tier journal in the area of Sustainable Development. He serves on the Scientific and Organizing Committee of several conferences that take place in different countries around the world such as CLAIO (Latin-American Operations Research Congress), SDM, EURO/IFORS and ICEIS and has been the general co-chair of the 2015 and 2017 Global Conferences on the Theory and Practice of OR/OM for sustainability.
He has over 20 years of experience in education, research, development and innovation projects that have been developed in different countries around the world including Angola, South Africa, UK, USA, and several Latin-American countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Ecuador. In addition, he has also worked as a consultant for governments, NGOs, and more than 50 small-medium sized companies with operations in different countries.
