Dr Dawn Hutchinson

Dr Dawn Hutchinson has taught within the Philosophy and Religion Department at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, USA, since 2004. She specializes in American religious history, with particular emphasis on new religious movements.

She is currently working on a book entitled Prosperity or Success? A Brief History of New Thought’s Relationship to American Business for NOVA Science Publishers, and she is conducting background research for a book on the Transcendentalist Club. She published Antiquity and Social Reform: Religious Experience in the Unification Church, Feminist Wicca and the Nation of Yahweh in 2010.

Dawn graduated from Christopher Newport in 1990 with a Bachelor’s of Music. She received her MA from the University of South Florida (2001) in Comparative Religions, and her PhD from Florida State University (2007) in American Religious History.

Areas of academic interest include new religious movements, feminism, African American religious history, gender/religion, Gnosticism, New Thought, transcendentalism, and the Social Gospel Movement.
