Dr Cecilia Dean is a director of a private company involved in management information consultancy, research, publishing and part time postgraduate tutoring. Her career has combined academic roles of research, training and lecturing with the practical application of theories in various functions and at different levels in large and international organisations.
Initially she qualified with a medical BSc but preferred to follow a short period in education before moving into a career in IT, from programmer through training management to senior management and corporate strategy positions as well as management consultancy. The firms she has worked for include IBM, KPMG and Aviva.
Academically she was linked to the Open University and the University of Leicester, UK, as a part time tutor to distance learning business and management students on subjects including strategy, ethics, management and marketing. In addition to implementing full strategic planning systems, she concluded her full time career as the senior strategy manager for Aviva Life.
During this time she became interested in the analytic philosophical similarities between the functioning of organisations compared to living entities, as promoted by functionalists. The combination of her theoretical knowledge from her medical BSc and her practical business experience resulted in her PhD research in this field as well as further publications on the practical applications of a more modern approach to the theory of functionalism in business.
