Professor Bavjola Shatro

Bavjola Shatro is Associate Professor of Contemporary Albanian Literature and World Literature of the Twentieth Century at Aleksandër Moisiu University, Albania. She is also Vice-President of the South East European Studies Association  (SEESA), USA.

Bavjola holds a doctorate in Literary Studies from the Institute of Linguistics and Literary Studies at the National Center for Albanian Studies in Tirana. She previously attended the University of Tirana, where she received her Bachelor Diploma with an Excellent Student Honour and a Master’s degree specializing in contemporary Albanian literature and comparative literature.

She has wide academic experience as a researcher and has been an invited lecturer in different universities such as Pennsylvania State University, USA, the University of Salamanca, Spain, Abo Akademi University, Finland, the University of Turku, Finland, and the University of Pavia, Italy.

She is author of three books in the field of literary studies, the most recent being Between(s) and Beyond(s) in Contemporary Albanian Literature. This monograph, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2016, focuses on contemporary Albanian poetry and on the theoretical perspective offered by comparative literature and world literature (studies) for the study of contemporary Albanian literature and the so-called minor literatures in a globalizing age.

Bavjola is the co-author of another three books in the fields of cultural studies and humanities published in Albania, and is the author of afterwords and prefaces of books and academic interviews with scholars in the field of literary studies and linguistics. She has contributed chapters in four volumes of selected essays published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing and in one volume published by the University of Montenegro.

She is co-editor, together with Professor Alena Kacmarova of the University of Presov, Slovakia, of the volume of selected essays Challenges in Anglophone Language(s), Literature and Culture, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2017.

Besides authoring around 25 articles in literary periodicals and magazines published in Italy, Albania and Kosovo, she has published 30 articles in different prestigious peer-reviewed journals and presented her papers in 34 conferences organized by universities and research institutes around the world. She is also a reviewer for various peer-reviewed journals.

Her research interests include comparative literature, world literature (studies), poetry studies, contemporary literature in English, contemporary Albanian literature, Italian literature of the twentieth century, aesthetics, and the sociology of literature.
