Professor P. Anbazhagan

Prof. Dr. Anbazhagan Panjamani graduated in Civil Engineering (B.E.) from the College of Engineering, Anna University, Guindy, Chennai, in 2002, and received his Master’s in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from the same institute in 2004. In 2007, he obtained his Doctorate in Geotechnical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. Presently, he is serving as an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His main interests are in earthquake Geotechnical engineering, applied geophysics and railway Geotechnical engineering.

Prof P. Anbazhagan’s research focuses on Engineering Seismology, which includes Local Seismicity – instrumentation and analysis; Simulation of Ground motions; Development of ground motion predication equations (GMPEs); Selection and Ranking of GMPEs; Maximum Magnitude Estimation; Seismic Hazard Analysis- Deterministic, Probabilistic and Rupture Based; Seismic Site Classification; Understating Seismic Site Response and Developing Design Spectrum. His research work on Seismic microzonation of the Indian city is implemented national wide to prepare seismic zonation of the country.

He received the IEI Young Engineers Award 2010-2011 from The Institution of Engineers (India) and the ISES Order of Merit 2015 Award for Outstanding Work in Earthquake Science, Young Scientist category, from the Indian Society of Earthquake Science. He received the Indian Geotechnical Society Reviewer of the Year 2016 Award for the outstanding contribution to the Indian Geotechnical Journal. He is now serving as a Research Advisor for Nan Yang Academy of Sciences, Singapore.

Prof P. Anbazhagan is also serving as a visiting professor for the third time at King Saud University (KSU), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Anbazhagan has formulated a new teaching course "Engineering Seismology" for the first time in India. He has published 72 journal papers; 97 conference papers and 1 book & 3 chapters. He has also developed 2 NPTEL web courses funded by MHRD. He is a very active research personality and has hosted visitors from UK, Italy and European countries. As of now Prof Anbazhagan has received about 72.3 million (723 lakhs Indian Rupees) funding so far, and he is an active consultant in his area of research. He is also serving as an expert member on the committees for arriving nuclear power plant design parameters, at the Department of Atomic Energy. He is also involved in the national mission on Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP). Dr. Anbazhagan is serving as an Editorial/Reviewer board member of the Research on Engineering Structures & Materials; International Journal of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (IJGEE); International Journal of Civil Engineering (IJCE) and Journal of Civil Engineering (JCE). He serves as a reviewer for most of the leading journals in his area of research.
