This book deals with 636 open-air museums in 31 European countries, and presents various details concerning the evolution of European vernacular architecture and the modern approach to open-air museums reconstructing old ways of living in the countryside. The publication has many illustrations and also contains 2339 black-and-white photos. In addition to scholars and the general reader, the book will also be of interest to open-air museums, as it provides insights into attracting visitors to such institutions.


Dr Jiří Langer, PhD, CSc, graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University, Czech Republic. He spent 11 years in Slovakia, working at open-air museums and galleries, before working as Deputy Director of the Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Czech Republic. He retired in 1996, and is the author of several books and numerous studies.

Dr Vladimír Klíma, PhD, CSc, studied English and French at the Philological Faculty of Charles University, Czech Republic. He has translated numerous novels, short stories and plays into Czech. In the mid-to-late 1990s, he was employed by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working as the Czech Ambassador to Ghana, Togo, and Burkina Faso. He retired in 1999, though is still an active researcher.
