What Every Engineer Should Know about the Organic Rankine Cycle and Waste Energy Recovery

This book deals with issues related to the efficient utilization of available energy in industrial sites. It also provides a recipe for minimizing the Global Warming Potential (GWP) and reducing the impact of Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) on nature, and presents a variety of insights into thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy management for teaching purposes. The book will assist beginner and senior engineers to deal with energy issues from a more global perspective.

Ali. H. Tarrad currently works as a Researcher at the Theoretical and Applied Energetics and Mechanics Laboratory (LEMTA), a joint research unit of CNRS and the University of Lorraine, France, and has over 14 years’ industry experience as a thermal engineering specialist. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, UK, in 1991. His work covers the areas of heat transfer, air conditioning and refrigeration, renewable energy, and waste energy recovery, and he is the author of several journal articles, book chapters, and reports.

"One of the highlights of this book is the author's ability to clearly explain the complex scientific and technical concepts of the ORC and waste energy recovery, making them accessible to readers with little or no prior knowledge of the subject. The book also provides a wealth of information on the latest industry standards and practices, making it an excellent resource for engineers working in the field of energy recovery."

Yerzhan Belyayev, Associate Professor, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakhstan

"What Every Engineer Should Know about the Organic Rankine Cycle and Waste Energy Recovery shall represent a valuable contribution to students, engineers and scientists involved in the study and application of waste heat recovery (WHR) and its conversion to useful energy through well-established thermodynamic processes such as the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems as described clearly and concisely in this book. With the global warming crisis and its existential impact on world population, it is imperative to implement ORC technologies, as described in the book, to lower emission of carbon dioxide and reduce fuel consumption."

Azzeddine Aoune, Senior Thermal Design Engineer, Smardt Inc.

"The Organic Rankine Cycle, or ORC, which uses waste energy as a heat source, is the topic covered in this book. This renewable-energy method is one of the most in-demand technologies in the advanced industrial society. It not only uses less energy but also significantly aids in maintaining a safe global greenhouse. As the title suggests, Dr. Tarrad was able to present what is actually required for every engineer who is interested in this subject. The book covers every idea that is currently available in the literature, moving from the fundamentals to the applications. I believe that this book can serve as an essential handbook, or specialized encyclopedia for many disciplines, bringing new insights and illuminating new ideas as time goes on."

Ali A. Abdulrasool, University of Kerbala

"[The book] is a valuable resource for beginners and seniors who utilize (ORC) to produce electricity and minimize the impacts of (GWP) and (ODP). It is well-written, well-organized, and provides a wealth of information on the subject."

Damiaa Saad, Assistant Professor, Mustansiriyah University, Iraq

"[This] book is suitable as a reference for engineers and researchers on-site developing thermal systems involved in power plants and industrial applications. It presents informative case studies coming from good understanding and experience whose aim is to recover waste heat in thermal systems, thus enhancing efficiency as well as reducing greenhouse gases."

Dr. Saib Abbas Hamid Al-Jubury, Mustansiriyah University, Iraq

"I was particularly impressed by the large amount of information Ali H. Tarrad managed to gather, synthetize, and share in this manuscript. In addition to recalling the basics and the most useful thermodynamic principles for the dimensioning and optimization of ORCs, this book also brings together a wealth of practical information that can help in their design. It is a pedagogical book, which can be used both as a teaching aid and as a guide for engineers who have to implement real systems.

"Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced engineer or scientist, you can be sure to find all the information you need here!"
Prof. Olivier Lottin,
Université de Lorraine, France

"The book has a good scientific level which guarantees its success as a good reference of the organic Rankine cycle."

Prof. Mohamed Salama Abed Elhady, German University in Cairo

"This book is an essential guide for engineers looking to improve their knowledge and understanding of the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) with a focus on waste heat recovery from low-range temperature sources. The book is structured in a logical and easy-to-follow manner, beginning with the basic principles of the ORC and progressing to more complex arrangements. Provided case studies also help a lot to understand the subject. Paying special attention to the environmental impacts while developing the subject is another strong point of this book."

Dr. Mahdi Majidniya, Research Center for Thermal Comfort (CRCT), Groupe Atlantic, France

"In summary, the present book in my point of view is a practical reference for researchers, engineers, and those specialized in the topic of energy utilization. I admire Dr. Tarrad for this effort, and encourage those of interest to the topic to make use of the material included within this valuable book."

Ahmad Muneer El-Deen Faik, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering, Mustansiriyah University, Iraq

"Ali Tarrad’s book fills a gap in the scientific and technical literature on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Without ever going into too many details, which would only be of interest to a highly specialized audience, it provides all the essentials that an engineer interested in the subject of ORCs on any scale needs to know. To sum up, the book produced by Dr Ali Tarrad is remarkable for several reasons. It deals with the ever-interesting subject of recovering waste heat and converting renewable thermal, solar, or geothermal energy into electrical energy. It brings together in a single volume all the essentials you need to know on the subject and provides all the valuable facts without drowning the reader in specialist detail. The technological aspects of the cycle's constituent elements are dealt with synthetically, and the various available technologies are explored in detail - a rarity in literature. There's no doubt that this highly educational book will be of great use to scientists, engineers, and postgraduate students."
