The Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2: An Overview
One hundred years after the deadly influenza pandemic of 1918-1919, the world was struck by another deadly infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It was believed that a century of scientific developments would make it easier for us to control this pandemic, but successive waves of the disease, new variants of the virus, and vaccine breakthrough infections, made it evident that we remained vulnerable. This pandemic was a wake-up call for all human beings.
SARS-CoV-2 is a new coronavirus. All the knowledge we have of it is only about two years old. This book brings together all the information related to the virus and the disease COVID-19, reviews recent research findings which have been published in international journals by scientists all over the world, and provides consolidated knowledge of a virus which has been continuously evolving over the last two years.
Thangam Menon is a scientist and academician with over four decades of experience in medical microbiology. She received her Master’s in Microbiology from Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, before moving to the University of Madras, India, where she obtained her doctorate in Microbiology. She has served at this latter institution as a Professor and Head of the Microbiology Department, and her research interests are in the fields of oral microbiome, candidiasis, infective endocarditis, streptococcal infections, viral hepatitis, and respiratory viruses. She was trained in molecular virology at the Royal Free Hospital, London, and is the author of over 170 publications. She is currently an Emeritus Professor in Microbiology at Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals at Saveetha University, India.
