An Annotated English Translation of Tagore en las barrancas de San Isidro

A detailed account of Rabindranath’s stay in Argentina, this book by Victoria Ocampo is an important document in tracing Indo-Argentine contact. This first English translation of the book makes it available to the larger English-speaking world. Its critical introduction uncovers the backdrop of Ocampo’s text in such a way that it helps the reader to situate the work within its specific context, and also raises significant critical questions. Scholars interested in Rabindranath Tagore or Victoria Ocampo, or Indo-Argentine contact in general, will benefit from the book’s notes and annotated bibliography. In addition, readers interested in translation studies will also find the volume helpful.

Victoria Ocampo, a prominent Argentine author and editor, is primarily known as the founder-editor of the journal Sur. She also founded the Sur Publishing house, and wrote numerous essays, most of which were published in her journal. Her 10 volumes of Testimonios, and six volumes of Autobiografía, published posthumously, provide important insights into the mind of Ocampo and also her milieu. Her only work of fiction, La laguna de los nenúfares, was published in 1926. One of the earliest woman editors and feminist activists of Latin America, Ocampo played a major role in transforming the literatures and cultures of not only Argentina, but the entirety of Latin America.

Nilanjana Bhattacharya teaches Comparative Literature at Visva-Bharati, India. Her research interests include translation studies, feminist literary criticism, and historiography. Parts of her research work on Rabindranath’s reception in Latin America have been published in various journals. She also co-edited Pracin Sahitya: An Annotated English Translation and Critical Essays, a book of essays on ancient literature by Rabindranath Tagore.
