Art and its Responses to Changes in Society
Art and its Responses to Changes in Society brings together studies of young researchers dealing with the topics of decline, transformation, and rebirth from various points of view, characteristic of several different fields of the humanities and social sciences, in order to yield new insights into the analyzed subjects. The topics discussed here are diverse: on the one hand, several chapters deal with the metamorphosis of particular pictorial or architectural motifs and concepts, while on the other, studies are included that are dedicated to the analysis of the opera of individual artists, to various periods in architecture and landscape architecture, and to national and state commissions in art, as well as representations of WW2 atrocities in Yugoslavia and attempts to artistically reaffirm Christian symbolism after the end of socialism.
As such, the book entails diverse scientific perceptions of art and society, from antiquity to modernity, from architecture to moving picture, from the USA to Yugoslavia, and from research on an object to observations on a concept.
Dr Ines Unetič is an Assistant Researcher at the Art History Department at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, and an independent interpreter of cultural heritage. The focus of her research is garden art and the history of designed gardens, and she regularly presents her research findings at symposia and public lectures and in different publications. She is also co-editor of the Bilten SUZD, and is engaged in a pedagogical process at the Faculty of Education at the University of Ljubljana.
Dr Martin Germ is Associate Professor at the Art History Department at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana. His research focuses on iconography and iconology. with emphasis on humanist themes in late medieval and Renaissance art. He is the editor of the journals Ars & Humanitas and Ikon, and a member of the Centre for Iconographic Studies (CIS) at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the University of Rijeka, Croatia.
Dr Martina Malešič is an Assistant Researcher at the Art History Department at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana. She is currently employed as a researcher in the research group “Slovene Art and Art of Central Europe and the Adriatic” at the University of Ljubljana. Her main research field is Slovenian architecture and design of the 20th century, and she is involved also in the promotion and popularization of modern architecture, by organizing various events, exhibitions and workshops.
Dr Asta Vrečko has received her PhD in Art History from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, where she is currently a Researcher. She is a member of the advisory board of the Institute for Labour Studies in Ljubljana, and occasionally works as a curator. Her main research topics are Slovenian and Yugoslav art of the 20th century, particularly art systems, the history of exhibition, and concentration camp art.
Miha Zor holds MA degrees in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory and Slovene Linguistics, and is currently completing his doctoral studies in Art History. His research is focused on illuminated Arthurian manuscripts of the late 13th and early 14th centuries, their stylistic and iconographical relationships and development, and the dynamics between literary and pictorial narration. He regularly presents his research at international conferences, and is a member of the International Arthurian Society. In addition to his academic activities, he works for the National Radio of Slovenia as film critic, pronunciation coach, announcer and music editor (specializing in French chanson).
