"[Genetically Modified Organisms: A Scientific-Political Dialogue on a Meaningless Meme] is an excellent book presenting a very strong case for abandoning the acronym GMO. It will be extremely helpful to scholars and educators in developing countries who need to persuade their populace and politicians to adopt modern methods to reap the benefits of more nutritious foods and greatly improved yields."

Orhan Pamuk and the Poetics of Fiction

This volume marks an exhilarating tour through the mesmerizing and labyrinthine fictional world of the Nobel Prize-winning Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. Despite being ranked alongside Marquez, Cortazar, Calvino, Borges and Eco, Pamuk is yet to receive due critical attention in the Anglophone world, where he has millions of readers. This book takes the reader on a fascinating ride through Pamuk’s novels from The Silent House, written in the early Eighties, to the recently published The Red Haired Woman. The nine novels that form the focus of this study straddle a period of more than three decades that witnessed the emergence of Pamuk as Turkey’s foremost novelist and a master fabulist. The book details the chemistry of the thematics and architectonics of Pamuk’s craft in a style shorn of dry pedantry and jargon trotting. Examining the intricate pattern of his creative topography in the light of theories ranging from psychoanalysis to spectral criticism, it represents a timely and illuminating contribution to the study of contemporary fiction.

Umer O. Thasneem is a bilingual author and columnist, writing in English and Malayalam. He holds a PhD in English Literature from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and an MSc in Culture and Society from the London School of Economics. His first book, The Soul of the Desert, chronicling early Islamic history, won international acclaim from writers like Ziauddin Sardar and Susan Nathan, who described it as “riveting” and “ethereal.” He is currently an Assistant Professor of English Literature at University of Calicut, India, and has lectured extensively on topics related to post-colonial literature, trauma theory, identity politics, and media theory.

“Given the relative lack of serious research on the great Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk, Umer Thasneem’s major new study is a very welcome addition to the catalogue. This is a wide-ranging and very detailed survey of the author’s work which is both passionate about its subject, while critical when necessary. Thasneem shows great confidence across the multitude of fields and disciplines that he draws upon, including post-colonial theory, continental philosophy, psychoanalysis and cultural theory, all of which illuminate the texts in new and challenging ways. Written in an accessible language, this text would suit both undergraduate and postgraduate literature students, as well as the general reader. Essential reading!”
