Large Dams in India: The Missing Dimension of Science, Technology and Society (STS)

This book fills the existing lacuna in research in Science, Technology and Society (STS) through a review of existing studies of large dams in India, and analysing a case study of the proposed Tipaimukh dam project in Manipur, India. It reveals the strong connections between risk, technology, politics and environmentalism in the context of the Tipaimukh dam.


Thounaojam Somokanta is a Guest Faculty in Sociology at Kamala Nehru College at Delhi University, India. Previously, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Responsible Business in New Delhi, which was supported by the University of Basel, Switzerland. He received his Master’s Degree in Sociology from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India, and his MPhil and PhD in Science, Society and Development from the Central University of Gujarat, India. His research focuses on the risks and politics of hydropower in India, environmental activism, feminist studies of technology and sustainability transitions in urban India.
