Dr. Shamini Srivastava’s ‘Recommended Read’:

Applied Social Psychology

Editors: Patricia-Luciana Runcan, Georgeta Raţă

The concept of applied social psychology aims at using social psychology theories and principles to improve the functioning of institutions and individuals. The five chapters of this book contain carefully selected essays that approach both academic issues and empiric research results covering a wide range of interests. The ways in which vulnerable groups rely on psychological mechanisms in their adjustment to concrete situations, and new research in the sphere of mental health are two such subjects covered here.

Applied Social Psychology represents a landmark for the interdisciplinary approach to social psychology by focusing on the different and burning issues of modern society. First of all, it focuses on theoretical approaches to psychology, which considerably focused on the frame for today’s orientation in the area of applied psychology. Furthermore, it deals with this concerned field with special reference to school psychology. In this area this book focuses on the attitude of students towards their career, and how social identity is represented among the students. This book also offers a large amount of empirical evidence for the better understanding of these issues. It is very appreciable that this book also deals with the role of media in relation to teenagers and their personal development and interpersonal relationships in the cultural context. This section is very useful and beneficial in understanding the behavior of teenagers in the social context. It is really impressive that this book also tackles some current societal issues such as addiction and media structure in a new era. Internet addiction is the most pervasive and challenging issue in recent years. That is why this book is very unique and impressive. Lastly, this book focuses on the extremely sensible area of social psychology i.e. on mental health issues which differentiate between a normal and a pathologic person. Different mental health issues are covered in this section with special focus on postpartum depression, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer disease, schizophrenia. It is a very noteworthy point, and this becomes a key chapter for the readers and should also attract students and academics to study more and more in the field of psychology. Further, those who are professionally trained and want to deepen their knowledge about the applied social psychology should read this book.
