An Overview of Historical and Socio-economic Evolution in the Americas

This book includes concise descriptions of the history of 28 nations on the American continent, and focuses on features that hinder authentic development, particularly ethnic or class conflicts and wealth distribution. Its purpose is to stimulate an appreciation of history and cultural values, thus reinforcing the harmony of social relations. Essential elements of history, economics and sociology are presented in a plain and easily readable form, allowing the book to be directed to a non-specialized audience of individuals and students at the bachelors level in both developed and developing countries. The leadership of new generations will need to consider new development models based on balanced compromises between economic and technological progress and the most basic aspirations of society.

Each chapter includes a brief presentation of data on the territory and the ethnic composition and current socio-economic situation of a particular American nation. They also provide a scholarly description of the main historical events, and end with a brief insight into how the successes or difficulties of the individual country relate to cultural and historical events and to the evolution of that country’s national identity or, indeed, identities.

Alberto Ciferri is a Professor of Chemistry and President of the Jepa-Limmat Foundation. His most recent publication is the article “Socio-economic Inequalities in the Americas. A Mitigating Educational Approach” in Journal of Education and Development (December 2018).

“The book provides an interesting and complete review on the evolution of all North, Central and South American countries from the historical, social, cultural, political and economic points of view. Most of the chapters of the book are in relation to a specific American country. Due to this structure, the book can be used by professionals who are interested either in a specific country or the entire American continent. The detailed description of historical, socio-economic and political events makes the book interesting for the general public and especially interesting for students from different fields of social science. The book provides an opportunity to understand how [the] economic, political and sociological circumstances of a country are interrelated, and how they have simultaneously influenced each other [over] the centuries. The review provided by the book is complete and [will be] very interesting for the reader, as it relates economic or social issues with historical events, cultural heritage, political tendencies and sociological developments.”

“An Overview of Historical and Socio-economic Evolution in the Americas is a riveting account on, and a fascinating journey across, the different national realities coexisting today in this continent. Every single author contributing to the book describes separately one among the modern American nations and is committed to tracing the historical-environmental differences in which these countries were progressively formed. A variable distribution of local resources, environmental and climatic peculiarities, [and] different opportunities for economic development marked since the beginning the different processes of colonization, the styles of local government, the character of colonial societies, and the difference in the arising of the independence movements. These elements, according to [book’s] analysis, continue, in a certain way, to influence the individual historical process of development of different American nations and still strongly determine their self-recognition. For these reasons, the book is a great opportunity for different kinds of readers. It is a tool for American students to achieve a better understanding of the historical roots of the societies in which they live, and to contribute more consciously to their future with the help of a strengthened socio-economic culture. It is an instrument for scholars, to get a more documented and deeper insight into modern American national realities.”

“I just finished reading an impressive book entitled An Overview of Historical and Socio-economic Evolution in the Americas. I was especially impressed with Chapter One. It set a theme that I think is badly needed when describing the Americas. […] After reading each concise description of the other countries, I wanted to learn more. In that way, the book succeeds as a text book and background reading for more advanced courses. It may also offer encouragement to part of the target audience - Central America. I applaud the goal of offering courses that stimulate new models of development. […] Hopefully, [the book shows] the students and other readers that there is a better way – a better model of development. A theme that runs through most of the book is that we need a better model. We need a model that rejects racism, slavery, genocide and war. There are also many fascinating historical facts in this book. They help explain the current societies and norms of the many American nations. I highly recommend this book and feel enriched having read it.”
