African Intellectuals and the State of the Continent: Essays in Honor of Professor Sulayman S. Nyang

This festschrift is composed in honor of a distinguished scholar and Pan-Africanist, Professor Sulayman S. Nyang, whose career and intellectual pursuits spans more than 45 years—much of it at Howard University. Nyang’s contributions to African affairs transcend the scope of the academic world as he served as First Secretary and Head of Chancery of the Gambian Embassy in Saudi Arabia from 1975 to 1977, and consultant to the World Bank and United Nations agencies. In addition, Professor Nyang served as the President of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington, DC, and a member of the boards of many academic journals, and organizations of Islamic Studies in the USA. He has published copiously on a variety of issues affecting continental Africans, Africans in the Diaspora, and beyond. He has published and collaborated on dozens of books and book chapters and more than 100 articles in referred journals.

“This book in honor of Sulayman Nyang, a renowned Africanist, is a compendium of the cream of scholarship by distinguished academics. It sheds essential intellectual light on the critical issues of the African condition. The chapters cover a wide range of issues like governance, religion, terrorism and political integration. While most of the past intellectual reflections on these issues have employed externally derived paradigms, the present volume is an objective critical explanation from within. This book will be highly rewarding to read.”
—John A.A Ayoade, Emeritus Professor of Political Science, University of Ibadan, Nigeria

“This Festschrift, in honor of one of Africa’s most lustrous and respected scholars, is the epitome of the academic pursuits of Professor Sulayman S. Nyang. Professor Nyang is considered an astute diplomat, a scholar, a peacemaker, and a humanist who invariably urges African leaders to be serious and sincere about the state of human rights, peace, and development in their countries.”
—Professor Getachew Metaferia, Department of Political Science, Morgan State University, USA

“This book, at once a celebration of and a testimonial to Professor Nyang’s contributions to scholarship, examines more than four decades of his rigorous intellectual exertions on four subjects, namely, Africa and its people; Islam and Islamic philosophy; inter-faith dialogue; and issues of justice and the wellbeing of humanity. The assembled scholars interrogate, dissect and provide further elucidation of the four cardinal subjects that have formed the major pillars of Professor Nyang’s scholarship. This book comes highly recommended.”
—W. Alade Fawole, Professor of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria
