Dr Catalina Oana Curceanu

Nuclear Experimental Physics

Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare

Dr Catalina Oana Curceanu graduated from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Bucharest, Romania, with a specialization in Particle and Nuclear Physics. She obtained her PhD in physics from IFIN-HH (Bucharest) with a thesis on the experimental search of exotic mesons within the OBELIX experiment at CERN. She is currently Senior Researcher and group leader at the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF) of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), Italy, where her research team is performing experiments in nuclear and quantum physics. She is the spokesperson of the SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration, which is realizing unique measurements of kaonic atoms at the DAFNE Collider at LNF-INFN, and of the VIP collaboration, which is performing advanced tests of quantum mechanics at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy.

Author of more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, Catalina has organized dozens of scientific events, has given invited talks at major international conferences, and is very active in disseminating science towards schools and the general public. She is a member of the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi) and has won various awards and prizes, among which are the 2017 Emmy Noether Distinction of the European Society of Physics, the 2017 Vice-Chancellor Visiting Scientist International Award from the University of Wollongong, Australia, and awards from the John Templeton Foundation and the Foundational Question Institute (FQXi) for projects on quantum mechanics. She participates in various European and  research projects in nuclear and quantum physics.
