Meet our Authors: Lynn Zubernis - September 2014

Dr Lynn Zubernis is a Clinical Psychologist and Professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. She is also Area Chair for Stardom and Fandom for the Southwest Popular Culture Association and the Associate Editor of The Journal of Fandom Studies

Lynn’s interest in the emerging area of fan studies was ignited by the ground-breaking cult television show ‘Supernatural’ and its equally ground-breaking ‘fandom’. Along with her co-author, Katherine Larsen, Lynn’s close relationships within the fan community allowed an intimate behind-the-scenes examination of fan psychology, passion, motivation, and shame. Lynn and Katherine have now authored a number of books on fandom, two of which have been published under Cambridge Scholars Publishing: Fandom At The Crossroads: Celebration, Shame and Fan/Producer Relationships, and Fan Culture: Theory/Practice. In addition to her work in fandom research, Lynn teaches graduate courses in human development, group dynamics, counselling techniques and theory.

She explains her reasons for choosing to publish with Cambridge Scholars and emphasises our commitment to innovative research:

“As a clinical psychologist, I jumped into the new and exciting world of fan studies research uncertain of whether there was a market for what I wanted to write. Would there be an audience for a book about the psychology of being a fan that didn't come from the perspective of pathology? Finding a publisher was daunting, as the field was new and there were few psychologists writing in fan studies, especially from such a perspective. Cambridge Scholars Publishing took a chance and threw their support behind the project. Cambridge's encouragement and belief in ‘Fandom At The Crossroads’ was invaluable as we finished the research and as the manuscript came together. That support continued in the final stages of preparation, with professional and high quality editing and help with everything from permissions to high resolution photographs. Our cover graphics were a collaboration with an amazing graphics editor; four published books later, it remains my favourite cover ever.

I would highly recommend working with Cambridge Scholars, who are not afraid to take a chance on an exciting new project and are skilled at providing assistance with all phases of the publication process.”
