Meet our Authors: Heather Brunskell-Evans - June 2018

Heather Brunskell-Evans has taught and researched at numerous universities in the UK, including Goldsmiths, the London School of Economics, the University of Leicester, and latterly King’s College London. She completed her MA at Goldsmiths where she specialised in the work of Luce Irigaray and the philosophy of language and the body. She also completed a doctoral thesis at Goldsmiths where she analysed the philosophy and ethics of childhood, gender and sexuality in the work of Foucault, queer theory and radical feminism. Her focus was on the power relationships between adults and children and young people, and how to conceptualise the latter’s relationship to their bodies. She went on to teach the philosophy and sociology of education, and the relationship between medicine and the law in the construction of modern sexed and gendered subjectivities.

Heather has published internationally on a range of topics, including on higher education in the UK, and with Michele Moore on the politics of higher education in Iraq. Her first book with Cambridge Scholars Publishing was published in 2016, entitled The Sexualized Body and the Medical Authority of Pornography: Performing Sexual Liberation.

Most recently, she has collaborated again with Michele Moore on the 2018 book Transgender Children and Young People: Born in Your Own Body, which has just been published by Cambridge Scholars in a paperback edition, and which will be followed by a second just-contracted book focusing on the transgender child. Heather recently appeared on the BBC’s The Big Questions on the 3rd of June to discuss her work and its continuing importance.

Heather explains her and Michele’s rationale for publishing with Cambridge Scholars:

Cambridge Scholars contacted me in 2014 and invited me to write about my research on the relationship between medicine, sexology and pornography in the construction of the ‘sexually liberated subject’. Cambridge Scholars’ request has turned into the most fruitful of collaborations. My first book was an edited collection, and from inception to completion I was given expert, professional advice always delivered with a warm, friendly approach.

Cambridge Scholars therefore became the obvious choice when my colleague Michele Moore and I became interested in the fast-growing, new cultural phenomenon of ‘the transgender child and young person’. Michele is a professor of inclusive education and editor in chief of the journal Disability and Society. Our focus was the role of political activism and pressure groups in knowledge-making about children’s and young people’s sexed bodies and gender identities, and thus the role of political activism in the construction of the medico-legal figure of ‘the transgender child and young person’. We decided to invite the perspectives of a number of stakeholders for this edited collection including parents, academics, educationalists, psychotherapists, and those who had decided to de-transition.

Our mutual experience of working with Cambridge Scholars mirrored my original experience. The editorial guidance given to us has always combined with support and encouragement to pursue and to retain the integrity of our topic and mode of analysis. Michele and I very much hope to further our collaboration with Cambridge Scholars in the future.
