John Stephens is an author and researcher in the field of religious studies. He received his PhD in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1982. His areas of specialization include ancient Mediterranean religious traditions and the psychology of religion. His research interests focus upon the subjects of religious experience, especially as it occurred in the ancient world, and the world of ancient dream literature. His previous publications include The Dreams and Visions of Aelius Aristides: A Case-Study in the History of Religions, and an article about the dream diary of the second century CE Christian martyr St. Perpetua which appeared in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Dream Research in 2013.
